Had dinner here with three friends tonight. With a bright, cozy, and clean look, the house-turned-bistro felt warm and welcoming. I immediately took note of the restaurant's indoor and outdoor seating, the fresh flowers dressing its warm wooden tables, the French music sweetly playing in the background, and its subtle nod to Rwanda through a collection of Kigali-at-night photographs on the walls. The menu is varied, but not overwhelming, and includes Belgian/French favourites like moules frites (mussels and chips) and steak frites (steak and fries). We were served olive bread as a starter. It looked like foccacia, but crumbled like a biscuit. It was pretty good. I followed that with the steak (filet de boeuf grillé aux herbes) cooked to medium rare, served with Béarnaise sauce and mashed potatoes (11,000 RWF).The beef was perfectly cooked, browned on the outside with a warm red centre and so tender that my butter knife cut through with relative ease. The Béarnaise sauce was a great accompaniment and the mashed potatoes were buttery and delicious. I was pleasantly surprised that the meal also included a side salad, but I found the dressing much too sour for my taste (too much vinegar?). For dessert, I had the apple pie with speculoos ice cream (6,000 RWF). It was good, but I found that the two tastes offset each other, rather than complementing each other. I finished the meal with a shot of espresso (1,500 RWF). The service started out good, but I think the servers forgot about us when a larger party arrived. The chef personally greeted us twice. Overall, my experience was good. The food is a bit pricey, but notably better in quality and taste than a lot of other places around town. The food and coziness of the restaurant makes it a great choice for a date night.
I heard so much about Poivre Noir burgers that I just had to try them out. I ordered Le Burger with cheddar cheese and bacon as extra (500RWF each) and I have to say I was very impressed. The bread was homemade and fresh, the meat cooked just as I wanted it and the flavors blended well together. The burger came with a side of chips (with dip sauce) and coleslaw. I particularly loved the coleslaw, but I was too full by the time I got to try out the chips. They were good though, fat and lightly fried in true rwandan (or belgian?) fashion. For dessert, I ordered a mousse of chocolat which I really liked but thought was a bit too pricey. Overall the food at Poivre Noir is quite expensive for Kigali standards, however I will definitely go back whenever I feel like spoiling myself. It was definitely worth it.
I had heard a lot about Poivre Noir before I went for the first time (all good things!) And it had been really packed around that time, so my friends and I made a reservation. I must say though the prices are a bit high, it was worth it! I really enjoyed the menu, with fresh ingredients and lovely flavors. It makes me a bit sad on one end that their menu is always changing, but it does mean new great things to try!
I enjoyed Poivre Noir for its sophisticated dining, with an ever-changing menu that keeps me coming back. You can really tell that the food here is prepared to a higher standard. They also have a killer hamburger, that’s always spot on.
I had heard about Poivre Noir many times and always wanted to try it out and I finally did. I usually do not like eating out because of the many times I have been disappointed and I love home cooked meal. I really enjoyed the ambiance of the place...from the pictures on the walls to the nice soft music and the good lighting. The service was good, they immediately took my order "filet mignon de porc, jus corse a l'estragon" (9,000Rwf) and it was quite quick. The food was delicious, the porc was well cooked and the potatoes were really light with an assortment of vegetables boiled to perfection. For desert, I had a chocolate mousse which was really nice too. Overall I'd recommend Poivre Noir though I think it's expensive for Rwanda standards and the quantity served is really small! I'll probably go back again...good place for couples or business diner...
